A blocked toilet is a mess but it is rarely a disaster, as long as you stop it getting worse. Before you reach for the phone, do these three things.
What actually blocks a toilet
After twenty years of clearing them across Sydney, the list of culprits is short and very predictable.
Toilet problem or sewer problem? How to tell
This is the question that decides how the job goes, and you can usually answer it yourself before we arrive.
If only the toilet is affected, the shower and basin drain normally, and the blockage arrived suddenly, it is almost certainly in the pan or the S-bend. That is a quick clear, from $69, and we are usually done within the hour.
If the shower or floor waste is also slow, water gurgles in one fixture when you use another, or dirty water rises in the shower when the toilet is flushed, the blockage is in the sewer line beyond the toilet. That is a drain job. We clear it with a jet blaster or electric eel from the overflow gully outside and run a CCTV camera through to find the cause, usually roots or a broken joint. A toilet that blocks repeatedly under normal use, or a cistern that no longer flushes with any force, is often a worn or badly installed toilet rather than a blocked one. We repair and replace pans, cisterns and inlet valves as part of our toilet and tap repairs service.
Sewage overflow is a health issue, not just a mess
Water that has come back up out of a toilet or shower is raw sewage. It carries the bacteria and viruses behind gastro and worse, and it soaks into grout, carpet and skirting boards where it keeps doing so. Keep children and pets out of the room, do not track it through the house, and wear gloves if you have to touch anything. Once we have cleared the line, wash hard surfaces with hot water and disinfectant. Carpet or underlay that has soaked up sewage generally needs replacing rather than cleaning.
If sewage is coming out at the outdoor gully rather than inside, that is the system doing its job. The gully is designed as the first point of release so the overflow happens in the yard, not the bathroom. It still needs clearing today, before the next flush pushes it further.
